Insulin injection not the only treatment procedure for Type 1 diabetes: study proves

Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to properly control blood sugar levels. So its the insulin deficiency that impels doctors to this day prescribe insulin injections to patients suffering from this disease. But wait this is not the end!

Surprises never cease in the spectra of medical science. Most recently rodents suffering from Type 1 diabetes were completely cured with a single injection of a substance other than insulin.

This unique happening was the consequence of a research conducted by the experts of University of Texas Southwestern(UTS) on insulin-deficient mice dying of diabetic coma.

The mice were injected with leptin. After that they started to secrete excess amount of leptin inside their body. This reversed the effect of type 1 diabetes including weight loss, hyperglycemia and ketoacidosis, a potentially fatal condition that develops when the body doesn’t have enough insulin to meet basic metabolic requirements.

The animals were saved from death and are leading healthy, normal life. Mind it no insulin injection was given to them. Scientists still can’t believe this extraordinary happening.

Primarily, they think that leptin is capable of suppressing glucagon, a hormone produced by the pancreas that raises glucose levels. The next step is to study other potential glucagon suppressants and begin leptin clinical trials within the next year, said an UTS release.
