Pregnancy Risks for Diabetic Women

The study by the British Medical Journal says pregnant women with diabetes should be given special fetal heart scans because of the increased risk of abnormalities and infant death. Women with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are more than twice as likely to deliver babies with major congenital anomalies, the BBC reported Friday.

In addition, the study showed that the rate at which babies died shortly after birth was four times higher for women with both types of diabetes.

Along with fetal heart scans, the study also recommends that diabetic women take higher than usual doses of folic acid, known to reduce the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida.
