FA Device Could be Used to Detect Diabetes Before Its Diagnosis

Eye-ImageAccording to the scientists of the University of Michigan, they have created a new instrument called as FA device which is capable of detecting the metabolic stress and tissue damage that occurs long before the first symptoms of the diabetes.

This device is created in such a way that in five minutes it can capture the images of  both of the eyes and detect the changes in the retinal tissue.

It has been seen that due to high levels of flavoprotein auto fluorescence (FA), metabolic stress of the body changes that in turn changes the intensity of the cellular fluorescence of the retinal tissue. And this device helps in measuring the changes of the retinal tissue.

They conducted a study undergoing 21 patients who had diabetes to determine whether the device is capable of detecting the abnormal metabolism in the retina of the patients.

FA levels of those individuals were measured and compared with the results of  healthy individuals with matching age. As a  result they found that the FA level of the diabetic patients was significantly higher than the non- diabetic patients.

The results conclude that the FA device is able to detect the risk of diabetes long before its diagnosis.
