Diabetes drug Byetta sucks– claims another four lives
Four more diabetes patients have come under the deadly grip of the diabetes drug Byetta in Washington D.C. today. Thus the death toll has reached to six. Last week two more persons also suffered the same result here.
The diabetes drug is manufactured by the Eli Lilly & Co. and Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. All the patients, fall prey to death, are reported to have developed acute pancreatitis. The situation can cause nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Last week, the FDA also said it plans to strengthen warnings about serious pancreatitis problems linked to the drug.
Byetta is an injected medication that was approved by the FDA in 2005. It is used to improve blood sugar control and can be combined with other diabetes drugs. Company officials say benefits of the drug still outweigh the risks. The drug is derived from a poisonous lizard called Gila Monster that lives in the Southwest and Mexico.
