Consumption Of Green Leafy Fruit And Vegetables Reduce the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes (NIDDM)

According to the study reported in the July issue of Diabetes Care, women who take green leafy vegetables and fruit have lower risk of type 2 Diabetes than those who take higher ratio of fruit juices.

The main goal of the study was to evaluate the association between the fruit, vegetable and fruit juice and the development of type 2 Diabetes. The study was done involving 71,346 female nurses, aged 38 to 63 years. At the time of enrollment in 1984 they were free from any kind of Cardiovascular disease, Cancer and Diabetes.

During 18 year of followup they found that:

The increase of 3 servings of total fruit and vegetables per day was not associated with the development of diabetes .

Intake of total fruit and green leafy vegetables was inversely associated with the development of type 2 diabetes.

Increase in whole fruit consumption of 3 servings per day was linked to a reduced risk for type 2 diabetes

An increase of 1 serving per day of green leafy vegetables was associated with a slightly lower hazard of diabetes

An increase of 1 serving per day of fruit juice was linked to an increased risk for diabetes

Although these associations were independent of known risk factors for type 2 Diabetes, including age; body mass index; a family history of diabetes; smoking; postmenopausal hormone therapy; alcohol intake; physical activity; total energy intake; and intake of whole grains, nuts, processed meats, coffee, and potatoes.

“In general, the observed associations between fruits and vegetables are weaker than those for cardiovascular disease,” the study authors write. “However, if fruits and vegetables are used to replace refined grains and white potatoes, both of which have been shown to be associated with increased risk of diabetes, the benefits of regular consumption of fruits and vegetables should be substantial.”
