Children Are At Risk For Developing Type 2 Diabetes
The latest estimates from a study published recently in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine shows that some 2.7 million adolescents are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes and another 39,000 already have the disease that was once seen only in adults.
Type 2 diabetes, traditionally referred to as adult-onset diabetes, has been linked to overweight and obesity, but until recently was unknown in children.
Type 2 diabetics are resistant to insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Treatment usually involves weight loss and a diet low in sugar. People with type 1, or insulin-dependent diabetes, do not make insulin at all.
